September 18, 2021 is International Coastal Cleanup Day. Hammocks Beach State Park Beach is one of the sites for cleanup on this day. Carteret Big Sweep volunteers assist at three sites in Beaufort, NC. Carteret Big Sweep is an effort to clean trash from waterways, beaches, and roadsides. The annual event involves many volunteers as individuals and as groups, and their hard work pays off in the beautification of the area. Last year there were 1,055 volunteers cleaning 45 zones, filling 515 bags, and gathering 12,517 lbs. of trash. Among other things, here are some noteworthy items found: 9,841 cigarette butts, 75 dead animals, and 10,933 food and beverage related articles of trash. The event is coordinated by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.
