The Crystal Coast's sole airport, located in Beaufort, offers only chartered or private aircraft service. A modern facility, it is the sixth busiest municipal airport in North Carolina. Here you can arrange the services of private planes for trips or sightseeing or you can line up private flying lessons. The airport is named in memory of Capt. Michael J. Smith, a Beaufort native who served as pilot of space shuttle Challenger, which exploded January 28, 1986. Navy Capt. Smith learned to fly at this airfield.
