Located on NC Highway 101, a half-mile north of the intersection of U.S. Highway 70 E., County Home B&B is just minutes from Beaufort's famed historic district. Known as the County Home, it is one of the town's most interesting buildings and is Beaufort's only bed and breakfast listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1913-14, before the days of Social Security and welfare, it was operated by Carteret County for 29 years as a house for the area's "poor, aged and infirm." The building's architectural and cultural interest kept it safe from demolition but not deterioration until it was bought by Terry and Nan O'Pray for restoration into a bed and breakfast. Because of the building's simple yet classic design, don't expect the stereotypical Victorian home most imagine for a bed and breakfast. Instead, you'll find ten private, individually decorated efficiency suites complete with comfortable, charming decor. Its location and backyard pavilion on 2 acres make it an ideal getaway for weddings, family reunions or special weekends. Tell your family and friends you're going to the poorhouse where Southern hospitality is spoken with a Northern accent. Children are always welcome, and pets are allowed in special pet-friendly rooms.
